New threat for shooters

There appears to be a growing campaign to soften up public opinion for another assault on personal freedoms, this time on recreational hunters and sporting shooters. The anti-gun activists have been using the anniversary of the Port Arthur massacre and the highly politicised attempt to stop the importation of the Adler A110 lever action shotgun as the vehicle for bringing change.

Instead of activists focusing their energies on dealing with those illegally holding unregistered firearms and illegal importations, they focus on the law abiding gun owners. Only two percent of firearms used to commit a homicide from 1989 – 2006 were registered handguns, 98% were unregistered and held illegally.

Family First supports the vital role that recreational and commercial shooters, farmers and other landholders play in supporting sustainability, land care and native wildlife, particularly through culling, sport shooting and eradication of pest species. Family First does not support further restrictions on law abiding owners of firearms.

Australians should stand ready to resist any new attack on our freedoms and our way of life.
