Amanda Nickson - Mundingburra
Amanda has been married for 23 years and has three children aged 18, 15 and 12 years. She grew up in Sydney and moved to Queensland in 1984. She has worked in the electorate of Mundingburra for the last 14 years.
Amanda has worked as a social worker for over 22 years in a variety of positions in child protection, adoptions, foster care training, recruitment and juvenile justice and alternate care. Currently a Lecturer at James Cook University (since July 2005) in the Department of Social Work and Community Welfare, School of Arts and Social Sciences, Amanda has had many years experience in the welfare sector as a social worker, community educator and community development worker with such organisations as Centrelink, The Defence Community Organisation, Child Safety, Townsville Community Legal Service, Community Health and local government. Amanda's specialisations include professional supervision, community development and community education, critical incident management, child protection and alternate care. Amanda is also completing her PhD through JCU.
Amanda is passionate about the Mundingburra area and is concerned about social justice and equity for all families, individuals and communities. "Having worked in my professional capacity with many families in crisis and with marginalised and disadvantaged families and individuals, I have seen the negative impact of many government policies. I am passionate about social justice and equity for all families, individuals and communities and would like to influence policies that will promote both the rights and responsibilities of families and the rights and responsibilities of government towards families." Amanda is represting Family First for this very reason.
Amanda is a former national board member and former President of the North Qld Branch of the Australian Association of Social Workers.
In her spare time, Amanda enjoys bushwalking, bird-watching, swimming, music (including directing musicals), choirs, playing piano and sketching landscapes.
