The trigger for calling this early election was the failure of the Greens, Labor, and some crossbenchers to pass legislation to restore the Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC).
Family First Senator Bob Day has always been a strong advocate for the reintroduction of the ABCC. Both Senator Day and myself have building backgrounds and understand the need for a strong body like the ABCC to help stamp out the intimidation and corrupt practises operating within the building industry. The current handbrake on productivity costs the nation $billions every year.
Both Labor and the Greens have received political donations from the CFMEU, the building union that is well known for its intimidation of contractors and bullying of suppliers. In March the Fair Work Building and Construction agency launched an action against 100 CFMEU officials and delegates who are before the courts, accused of more than 1000 industrial breaches.
We are a modern economy, we cannot allow third world type behaviours and corruption to continue in our building sector or any other part of society.
